A walk through history.

From the moment you see the Athenaeum, you know this is a special place. With its iconic German Renaissance Revival architectural charm and soaring stain glass windows, it’s more than just a building. Check out what makes this National Historic Landmark special. We offer public and private group tours as well as free, self-guided tours of the building.

Guided Group Building Tours

The Athenaeum Foundation partners with Indiana Landmarks to offer guided tours of the building. Public tours are scheduled once a month from May to October, and private tours are available by appointment. Tours last approximately one hour and depart from the lobby of the Athenaeum at 401 East Michigan Street. Enter using the west wing doors and walk up the stairs, or use The Rathskeller entrance and ride the elevator to the lobby, adjacent to Coat Check Coffee.

Visit the Indiana Landmarks website for more information about guided group tours or to purchase tickets to an upcoming public tour.

Self-Guided & Online Tours

You can see photos and learn about the history of the building by visiting From A to Me, a virtual trip through the Athenaeum available online. This educational experience is also available in-person as a self-guided walking tour. Bring your smartphone or tablet next time you visit and follow the QR codes posted throughout the building. Free QR code reader apps are available for download. Take your time exploring.
