The Rathskeller

Established in 1894, The Rathskeller is the city’s oldest restaurant still in operation today and is regularly voted the best German restaurant in Indy. Located in the basement of the Athenaeum, The Rathskeller is reminiscent of both a quaint inn tucked in the Bavarian hills and a lively beer hall in Munich. Come enjoy live entertainment Wednesday through Saturday and some Sundays. During the warmer months, the party moves to the outdoor Biergarten under the stars!

Indiana German Heritage Society (IGHS)

The IGHS promotes education in German and German-American studies and seeks to help others to develop an appreciation of German contributions to Indiana. The IGHS believes that understanding the past illuminates the present. The IUPUI Max Kade German-American Center is shared by the Indiana German Heritage Society and the Athenaeum Turners.

IUPUI Max Kade German-American Center

The mission of the Max Kade German-American Center is to support German-American studies through research, teaching and service. German-American studies are generally defined as the study of the German diaspora in the United States and its effect on American culture, language and society. The study of German-American relations in general also falls under the center’s purview.
