In honor of Las Posadas and the commemoration of the journey that Joseph and Mary made from Nazareth to Bethlehem, our special programming will include a variety of festive music taking you on a holiday journey, ranging from mariachi bands to Latin pop singers. Families can gather and connect over holiday activities including ornament building, etc. We’ll even have a seven-star pinata (symbolic of the star which is said to have guided the three wise men of biblical tradition to the newborn Jesus) on display for the perfect family photo opp!
Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration of African roots — observed by people of all faith backgrounds —that’s anchored by seven principles known as the Nguzo Saba aimed at helping build and reinforce community. Our special celebration and programming will include traditional music, ranging from drum circles to dance groups, as well as a performance by a storyteller who will share the culture and tradition of this special holiday.
According to folklore, a mythical demon-goat arrives every year to scare and punish those who find themselves on the naughty list. With its long fangs, menacing horns, and a switch made of birch sticks, Krampus rules the night. Our Krampusnacht (Krampus Night) celebration dates back hundreds of years to the towns and villages of the European Alps, and is traditionally followed by the arrival of a kind-hearted gift giver (Sankt Nikolaus) who arrives the following day to reward those who’ve been good.
Krampusnacht includes family-friendly programming (3-6pm), with a special presentation by NoExit Performance — Indy’s most adventurous theatre company — with a tale from two “expert” storytellers uncovering the “truth” behind the myth of the goatman. The show will be followed by a visit from Krampus himself—from a safe distance of course! After that, stay for our evening programming (6-8pm) — it’s not for the faint of heart!
All are welcome to enjoy this nostalgic visit with Christmas past. With a focus on family fun and making lasting memories, the Athenaeum Foundation brings traditional holiday favorites to ring in the season of joy. Since 1985, the Sankt Nikolaus book of names has kept the name and age of every child who has visited with St. Nikolaus. At check in, your child’s name is added for a personalized visit with St. Nikolaus himself!
Street parking is free on Sundays, so bring the whole family and enjoy a day of fun activities!

Costa Rican soprano Yuriria Rodríguez holds the rare privilege of being able to sing in both classical and popular styles with great professionalism and expression. Reviews have praised Ms. Rodríguez as a singer “with a beautiful voice which recalls a force of nature” (Herald Times, Bloomington, IN). As a member of El Taller, at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University, she had the opportunity to share the stage with prominent guest musicians and Jacobs School of Music faculty, such as Grammy Award Winners Pablo Ziegler, Pablo Aslan, Michael Spiro, Gonzalo Grau and Sylvia McNair among many others.
In 2006, she sang the role of Maria in the tango-operita by A. Piazzolla and H.Ferrer, Maria de Buenos Aires, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, receiving a standing ovation in a sold out performance. In the classical realm, Ms. Rodríguez also sung the role of Despina in W.A. Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte (Costa Rica) and one of the three Rosales sisters in Indiana University’s collegiate premiere of Oswaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar, conducted by Carmen Helena Téllez.
Ms. Rodríguez studied voice with Mary Tortorich (Loyola University of New Orleans) and Fulvio Villalobos (Costa Rica) before coming to Indiana University, where she received a Bachelor of Music from Jacobs School of Music under the tutelage of Teresa Kubiak and Carlos Montané. In 2013 Yuriria graduated from the Master in Music program, also at Indiana University-Jacobs School of Music, where she studied with Prof. Mary Ann Hart.
She has been a winner at the National Society of Arts and Letters voice competition, in Bloomington, Indiana, and a winner of the 9th Annual Competition in the Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America, which allowed her to tour the United States as an artist sponsored by the Embassy of Spain, giving recitals of Zarzuela and Latin American/Spanish Art Song. Among other honors received while in school, she was awarded the Olimpia Barbera scholarship from the Latin American Music Center at IU to pursue studies in voice at the level of Master in Music.
Recently, Ms. Rodriguez was featured as a soloist in the University Singers performance of Mozart’s Requiem conducted by Richard Tang Yuk at Indiana University. She debuted at the Indiana Opera program as Suor Osmina in the 2011 production of Puccini’s Suor Angelica, and was casted again that summer to sing for the new opera The Tales of Lady Thi Kihn, by P. Q. Phan. In 2011 she sang the Soprano II role in Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor with the Philharmonic of Kalamazoo in the Bach Festival in Kalamazoo, MI, conducted by Prof. James Turner. Even most recently, Yuriria sang the role of Sombra, in Gabriela Ortiz’s Ana y su Sombra, commissioned by Reimagining Opera for Kids, a local Opera Company that Yuriria is proudly part of, and that performs all year round.
Currently, Yuriria splits her time between performing as a guest artist for the IU-Latin Jazz Ensemble conducted by Grammy award winners Michael Spiro and Wayne Wallace, as a choral conductor with the dynamic Coro Latinoamericano at Christ Church Cathedral, and developing a bilingual choral program for early music learners, also at Christ Church. Occasionally, she can be heard singing some Bach or Mozart, as a guest soloist for the Choir of Men and Choristers of Christ Church. Last year Yuri was called to be the sub for the role of Mimi in Costa Rica’s National Lyric Opera production of La Boheme.
The Freedom Train Storyteller; “Momma Portia” discovered storytelling in an unusual way – “She wasn’t deemed talented enough to sing in the church choir, so she was encouraged to do dramatic readings instead.” From that inauspicious beginning, Portia has become one of the best-known storytellers in Indianapolis. Portia believes that the oral tradition of storytelling is an important and unique component in the field of education with her degree in education from Indiana University, she seized the opportunity to utilize her talent/gift as a teaching tool.
The power of her voice and her dramatic interpretations leaves listeners spellbound as she make the words of legendary black women like Harriet Tubman, Madame CJ Walker and Mary McLeon Bethune take on new meaning. Storytelling has allowed Portia to weave her two loves of teaching and the arts into a successful career. This very talented artist presents stories to audiences of all ages throughout the country and emphasizes such topics as cultural awareness, American History, self-esteem building, and decision-making skills.
Story-time with Momma Portia consists of 30, 45 or 60-minute sessions including audience participation. Story sessions can be developed to enhance any theme or event desired. Momma Portia has over 200 stories and 65 themed story programs to choose from for the 2020-2021 season.

Since then the band has been performing regularly at bars, restaurants, street festivals, and corporate events around Indiana and Ohio.
