First Friday • Vital Signs: Glass & Multi-Media Art by Shane Leffingwell

About the Work: My glass art is created by masking the back of a piece of glass with a specialized material, then hand-drawing a horizontally-reversed design, so as to be correctly viewed from the front side. Then I cut out the design with an exacto knife and peeling the mask in stages, sandblasting the back of the glass a stage at a time, creating a multi-dimensional image. Color is then added by hand using oil paint, alcohol ink, or acrylics, depending on the end-purpose of the piece. The complexities incorporated create a very unique experience.

About Shane: As a passionate visual artist, I am driven by my desire to explore the intersection of beauty, functionality, and perspective. My work focuses on using mixed media, primarily sandblast-carved glass, to create immersive pieces that evoke both emotion and thought. I believe that art is a powerful tool for communication, transcending barriers of language and culture.
